What is GEO? A practical introduction for small businesses

Understand Generative Engine Optimization, what AI visibility means, and where a small business should begin.

THE USEFUL TAKEAWAY

GEO is a practical way to improve the information available about your business and observe how it appears in AI answers. Start with clarity, accessibility, and evidence.

A different way to be discovered

A customer no longer needs to start with a short keyword. They can ask an assistant to compare providers, explain a service, or help prepare a shortlist. An answer may contain a business name, links to sources, and advice drawn from several pages. That changes the experience of discovery, even when familiar search systems supply some of the underlying information.

Generative Engine Optimization, usually shortened to GEO, describes work aimed at improving visibility in those generated answers. It is a useful label for a set of tasks, rather than a special certification or a single technical setting. Different platforms retrieve, select, and present information differently. A technique that helps a reader understand your website does not automatically produce a recommendation in every assistant.

What you can actually improve

Begin with the information you control: what your business does, who it serves, where it operates, and what supports its claims. Your service descriptions should answer real purchase questions. Your public profiles should describe the same business. Important pages should be readable without logging in or interacting with a complicated interface.

Then consider independent evidence. Genuine professional listings, relevant coverage, and useful references can help people verify your identity and expertise. Their value depends on their relevance and accuracy. Buying a large volume of low-quality mentions is a poor substitute for a real reputation.

Separate three kinds of visibility

A mention means your business name appears. A citation means the answer links or points to a source. A recommendation means the system presents your business as an option for a particular need. These outcomes overlap, but they are different.

An assistant might cite your article about choosing a contractor without recommending your business. It might mention a company based on a third-party directory without linking to that company’s website. Record what actually happened instead of assigning every appearance the same value.

A small-business example

Imagine an independent plumbing company that serves three nearby towns. Its homepage says “quality solutions,” but never explains which repairs it handles. A better starting point is a specific drain-repair page: symptoms, scope, service area, assessment process, and clear ways to contact the business. Add real project photographs only when the company has permission to use them.

That page helps customers judge whether the company fits their problem. It also makes the company’s offering more explicit. This is a hypothetical example of useful website work, not evidence that a particular page change caused an AI recommendation.

Your first three actions

  • Write five questions a customer might ask before hiring you.
  • Check whether your website and public profiles provide clear, consistent answers.
  • Record a small baseline of AI responses, including the question, date, engine, and sources.

Use the baseline to choose a practical next task. Keep improving your actual business information and customer experience. Google’s official guidance says established SEO practices remain relevant to its generative search features; that platform-specific guidance should not be treated as a complete description of every AI engine. No provider can guarantee that your business will appear in an answer.
