FIELD GUIDE 07 / Local discovery

Business profile consistency: a practical local information audit

Review your business name, contact details, hours, services, and public profiles without chasing every directory.

THE USEFUL TAKEAWAY

Correct the places customers are likely to use. Consistency means agreement about real business facts, not identical marketing copy everywhere.

Build your reference record

Choose the business information you want the public to use. Record your real trading name, primary domain, customer contact method, main services, and service area. If customers can visit a location, record its address and hours. If you travel to customers, describe that model accurately.

Store this information somewhere the person updating your website can find it. Add a review date and an owner for each important field. A clear reference record prevents a new employee or agency from copying outdated details into another profile.

Prioritize meaningful profiles

Start with your own website, your main business profile, relevant professional or industry listings, and profiles that already send customers to you. Then examine search results for your business name and old contact details.

You do not need to register for every directory that exists. A low-quality site with no relevant audience may create more maintenance than value. Focus on accurate representations that matter to customers and your industry. Record login ownership and recovery options so a future update does not become an account-access problem.

Look for consequential contradictions

A misspelled street name and a completely wrong office are different problems. Prioritize contradictions that could misdirect a customer or misrepresent the business: old phone numbers, closed locations, unavailable services, and incorrect opening hours.

Some variation is normal. A profile may use an abbreviated address format or a shorter description. The objective is factual agreement. Avoid changing a legitimate business name to include a string of service keywords. Google’s representation guidelines require an accurate business identity and include rules about eligibility and address use.

Use an audit sheet

Create columns for platform, profile URL, access owner, business name, contact details, service area, hours, issues, action, and review date. Save the public URL after a correction. If a platform takes time to publish a change, mark it pending rather than assuming the update is complete.

For duplicate profiles, follow the platform’s official process. Do not create a fresh profile simply because you cannot access the existing one. Avoid fake locations or virtual-office claims intended to suggest a local presence you do not have. Eligibility depends on the platform and business model.

Keep the record alive

  • Review key facts after a move, rebrand, or service change.
  • Check special hours before a holiday or closure.
  • Review contact links after a website migration.
  • Remove former staff or outdated qualifications when necessary.
  • Keep genuine images current and permissioned.

This work reduces avoidable confusion and improves the reliability of your public information. It does not establish a published cross-platform AI ranking factor with a predictable weight. When an AI answer contains an incorrect fact, inspect the cited source if available, correct the authoritative public record, and document a later recheck. Corrections can take time and may not propagate to every system.
